After a friend developed a web platform for on-demand car washes, I saw an opportunity to scale the concept into a native mobile utility. Acting as the product designer, I translated the core web experience into a mobile-first app for on-demand vehicle maintenance. This case study details how I streamlined complex scheduling and service customization, allowing drivers to book everything from a quick wash to a roadside tire change directly to their driveway.

Auditing the Competition, Finding the White Space

I began with a comprehensive competitive audit of existing car care utilities, analyzing both user flows and App Store reviews to identify structural weaknesses in our competitors' designs.

User Challenges:

  • Technical Instability: High checkout drop-offs caused by buggy, multi-step booking forms.
  • Operational Friction: Unreliable contractor arrival times and zero live tracking.
  • Interface Distraction: Intrusive ad banners and cluttered visual hierarchies.
  • The Opportunity for Curbside: Users overwhelmingly praised "hassle-free, rapid booking." This became our North Star.

User Interviews & Core Themes

I conducted six in-depth user interviews with active drivers to understand the psychological and logistical barriers to routine vehicle maintenance. Here's what I found:

Theme A: The Trust Gap (Quality & Pricing Anxiety)

"I want a clean car, but I don't want to go somewhere that's going to scratch my paint. It has to be reliable and reasonably priced."
"I like my car clean but it's hard to find a good spot. It has to be reasonably priced and reliable. I don't want to go somewhere that's going to mess up my car"
"They're expensive and quite out of the way typically."

The Solution: Curbside must feature transparent pricing upfront, clear detail package breakdowns, and provider ratings to establish immediate credibility.

Theme B: The Convenience Conflict (Time Poverty)

"My schedule is packed, and traditional washes are expensive and out of the way. If I have to wait, I need a place with WiFi so I can stay productive."

The Solution: By bringing the service directly to the user's driveway, we eliminate travel and wait times entirely, returning valuable hours back to their day.

Reflections & Learnings

  • Mentorship accelerates growth: Seeking out continuous feedback from UX mentors was the most rewarding part of this project. Their guidance completely changed how I think about my role, helping me connect my design work to real-world industry standards.
  • Digging deeper during user research: While my initial user interviews gave me a solid baseline, I noticed gaps where I could have uncovered even richer insights. Going forward, I'm focusing on refining my research style to ask more open-ended, clarifying questions rather than sticking strictly to a set questionnaire.
  • Respecting the status quo: It is incredibly easy to fall into the trap of designing for novelty. During this sprint, I had to actively pull myself back from "cool" features to focus on what actually mattered: keeping the checkout flow simple and frictionless. Innovation only works when it supports usability.
