Partful: Redesigning Mobile Event Management for Accessibility and Social Trust

Partiful is taking social gathering by storm, quickly becoming the go-to event planning platform for Gen Z. By combining the playful, creative elements of messaging apps with the effortless organization of legacy planning tools, it makes creating invites, managing guest lists, and collecting RSVPs seamless.

With $27.3M raised in Series A funding from top-tier firms like Andreessen Horowitz and Benchmark, Partiful's business model relies on a hyper-active viral growth loop. This unsolicited mobile redesign focuses on securing that viral loop—modernizing their mobile landing experience, aligning core workflows with modern Web Accessibility standards (WCAG/ADA), and building deep user trust.

The Problem & Business Goal

As an avid Partiful user, I was thrilled for their mobile launch. While the app captures the brand's signature fun energy, several critical usability issues block the overall experience:

  • Critical ADA Compliance Risks: The energetic "New Event" flashing GIFs can cause adverse physical reactions, including seizures, in some users.
  • Familiarity Bias: Users might expect a established mental models (like standard grid systems or chronological feeds), making Partiful's unique interface feel disorienting at first glance.
  • Feature Disconnects: A lack of robust historical search, direct location mapping, and seamless external calendar syncing might cause users to leave the ecosystem to find basic event information.

The Critical Insight

To ensure my personal observations, I validated my findings by analyzing App Store reviews and conducting targeted user interviews. While users praised the app as "a frequent host's dream," they also noted it felt "pretty basic" and occasionally "missed expectations."

Key User Insights:

  • On Safety: "That flashing animation looks like an epilepsy danger."
  • On Hierarchy: "I want to see upcoming events first. Why is that buried?"
  • On Friction: "The RSVP flow feels so confusing."

Iterative Design & Testing

I mapped out multiple layout variations to balance Partiful's vibrant brand identity with clean data density. After testing low-fidelity concepts to see how users navigated structural changes, I moved into high-fidelity prototyping to refine the visual hierarchy.

The Redesigned Experience

  • Integrated a robust search function to dramatically reduce user effort and cognitive load, enabling instant, efficient access to specific content.
  • Replaced high-contrast animation with accessible design elements, ensuring the interface is safe, usable, and comfortable for all users, including those with visual sensitivities.
  • Introduced an intuitive calendar view to provide essential context, helping users better visualize and manage their commitments.
  • Transformed navigation into a scannable vertical layout, eliminating the friction of horizontal scrolling to accelerate search and enhance the decision-making flow.

Reflections & Learnings

Designing for digital accessibility taught me that safety and brand expression don't have to be mutually exclusive. My biggest takeaway from this project was learning how to advocate for WCAG compliance without stripping away Partiful's signature Gen-Z playfulness.

By replacing high-risk flashing animations with smart, dynamic interactions, I realized that true inclusive design doesn't limit creativity—it forces you to build cleaner, more intentional user experiences that protect and delight every user.
